Experiential Learning in Action: Forman’s Boatbuilding Team Tackles Its Biggest Project

February 2, 2026

Forman School’s Boatbuilding team is hard at work on its largest project to date—a custom-built 16.5-foot sailboat called the Stacy Quinn. Currently under construction, the vessel will feature a 4.5-foot beam, a 32-inch depth, and a small cabin designed to sleep two.

The boat is named in honor of Stacy Quinn ’69, P’08, a generous and longtime supporter of Forman whose commitment to the community continues to make meaningful learning experiences like this possible.

Through this build, students are gaining hands-on experience in every step of the process. From design and measurement to woodworking and assembly, they are developing problem-solving skills, craftsmanship, and confidence as they bring a real sailboat to life. This project highlights the power of experiential learning in boarding schools, where immersive, real-world experiences deepen academic growth and foster independence.

“All of us in the boatshop are excited about this build,” shared Coach Wendy Welshans P’24.

As the project takes shape, it stands as a powerful example of Forman’s commitment to experiential learning, giving students who learn differently the opportunity to learn by doing.
