Matthew Fisher ’24 spent two weeks in Iceland over the summer as part of a National Geographic Student Travel Program called Land of Fire and Ice. During his trip, Matthew delved into photography and geology as he explored the country. One of his photos taken on the trip has been selected to be featured in the program’s 2024 catalog.
Matthew aptly titled his photo Ice Pick. He recalls the moment he captured, sharing, “We were on a glacier, and we were ice climbing. We were down at the lower part of one of the crevasses, and the people who were putting the ice picks into the ice were up above. I kind of had an upward shot, and I was just like, I'm going to try to get a picture of this. I checked the photo later and realized it was actually really cool. Then I edited it, and I was like, oh, wow. ”
He submitted the photo to the program and says he was surprised when he found out the exciting news.
“I was at sports, and I got an email. The first part said, ‘One of your images was selected,’ and I was really confused. I thought it must have just been a mistake,” he says. “I turned off my phone, turned it back on, and looked at the email again. I was like, oh, my God.”
Matthew says photography is a hobby he enjoys. He is currently applying to colleges where he plans to study environmental science.
